SB 294 is a piece of legislation that sounds good at first – but would be devestating in its effect. The bill would require individuals who are getting unemployment checks to work a minimum of 24 hours at a non-profit institution. The bill, in theory, sounds like a good idea – but there are a few problems.
First, forcing labor to get an unemployment check is going to decrease the oppurtunity of people to look for jobs. If you are having a hard time finding a job while juggling every other aspect in your life, making someone work 24 hours is going to make it even more difficult. This is in addition to the “reemployment services” that are required of them.
Second, it does nothing to bring jobs to our state. Instead of focusing on creating jobs so that people will not be on unemployment, Georgia’s Republican Senators would rather spend their time punishing the unemployed. They have also sponsored legislation that will require drug testing to collect unemployment, which could result in children going hungry in our state.
Georgia’s senators need to spend more time trying to bring jobs to our state. I know they are in an epic pissing contest with the Lt. Governor over who can run the show. I know that it is easier to beat down the lower and middle class people in our state instead of standing up to their wealthy donors. However, they are suppose to be representing the will of the people in Georgia.

I am not sure who posted this but I am working on this bill for my policy class and would like to interview whoever wrote this piece. Please contact me at your convenience if this is a possibility.
